Responsible Pet Education - 10 Apr

In Week 10 we were excited to once again welcome Gina and her canine friends, Tessa & Cruze.  They showed our children how to recognise the meanings of dogs’ behaviours, and how and when to interact safely with dogs.  Gina told us the 3 handy rules – no owner, no lead, no touch!  She also gave us advice for if a dog comes up to you – stop and stand still; hands down by your side, be as quiet as a mouse; look at the ground and when you are able, take little steps backwards.  If you see a dog on a lead with the owner – walk over, stop 3 big steps away and ask the owner if you can pat the dog, if “yes” then ask the dog by letting it smell the back of your hand before patting it along the back.  The children really engaged with the song “Let Them Be” – don’t pat dogs when they are sleeping or eating and don’t touch the dog’s tail.

What a great experience, allowing the children to engage in a collaborative learning process and building on their knowledge and understandings.

“I am loving these daily reflections especially now that I am working and miss so much of Sam’s activities within the preschool. Good job girls.”
